Sony Corporation announced Sony AI — an organization dedicated to the research and development of artificial intelligence — to transform the way we cook and eat. At the same time, apply the newly developed technologies in a wide range of industries.
Sony’s new venture will operate in different countries such as Japan, the U.S., and Europe. The company’s AI lab is intended to focus on Sony’s interests in gaming, imaging and sensory equipment, and “gastronomy.”
Being one of the most prominent market players in the gaming industry, Sony said that the “adoption of new AI technologies developed through these flagship projects would be critical to further enhancing the value of Sony’s gaming and sensor businesses in the coming years.”
Close collaboration with relevant Sony Group business units is to be expected for the company to pull off this ambitious, yet timely project in terms of research and development.
Sony AI is not the first attempt of the company to penetrate the “gastronomy” sector. Back in April 2018, Sony struck an agreement with Carnegie Mellon University to work on artificial intelligence and robotics research. This partnership coursed through its U.S. subsidiary, the Sony Corporation of America.
Sony said, at the time, the gastronomic project would focus on research and development that would usher the company to produce artificial intelligence on “food preparation, cooking, and delivery.”
For the Japanese multinational conglomerate, however, the development of artificial intelligence in the food and beverage sector is intuitive. The technology that will be developed to handle “the complex and varied task of food preparation” could be used and applied across a wide range of industries.
