Stocks Expected To Open Higher
Stock futures are pointing to a higher opening Tuesday as the European Union sets its sites on some of its member’s mounting debt.
The Dow tumbled below 10,000 Tuesday as concerns that the growing problem in places like Greece, Spain and Portugal could spread and upend a global economic recovery. European Union officials will meet once more Thursday to talk about ways to speed up economic growth.
The European Union’s own government-backed lender said Tuesday that it cannot bail out Greece or any other European country that can’t pay its debts. The European Investment Bank said in a statement that it could “only finance economically viable projects” and that its rules would not allow it help an EU nation cover a budget deficit.
European markets rose in afternoon trading. Asian markets were mixed overnight.
